(Manila, Philippines, July 7, 2021), The community pantry which took the local and international headlines originated in the community of Maguinhawa in Quezon City–one of the places in the country’s capital region which suffers from high COVID-19 cases, and struggles with livelihood, including adjusted protocols for workplaces located in the largest city. The Radio Mindanao Network (RMN) Foundation acknowledged the significance of this initiative and gathered its volunteers and resources to launch the community pantries in various locations where RMN is heard by Filipinos.

Ang Banggerahan ni Radyoman

Hand-in-hand in the simple beginnings of RMN Community Pantry last April 2021, RMN Iloilo spearheaded the local pantries together with RMN Pagadian and RMN Roxas; offering free rice, fresh vegetables, OTC medicines, and canned goods in areas where RMN regional radio stations are located.

In the same month, RMN Dipolog, RMN Manila, RMN Surigao, RMN Tacloban, RMN iligan, and RMN Roxas sustained the operation of local community pantries by offering free essential goods to individuals. Considering the persistent threat of the pandemic, the radio stations coordinated with local government units to ensure that crowds practice the IATF health and safety protocols.

RMN Foundation for local community pantries

Last May 2021, RMN Foundation came together and joined the growing initiative of RMN radio stations. Added to the list of community pantries were facilitated by RMN Malaybalay, RMN Cagayan de Oro, and RMN Cebu. In response to the burning desire to help the unfortunate people in the time of the global health crisis, RMN Cebu took the generous action to the evacuation center sheltering 200 family victims of a fire incident, making way for the distribution of essential items that helped in alleviating their situation.

Thanks to the dedication and coordination between RMN radio stations and RMN Foundation, the cash and in-kind donations of the well-appreciated sponsors, partners, and donors found its way to people who are in dire need of assistance during the current situation.

The Radyo Trabaho Community Pantry

In line with the increasing number of community pantries and beneficiaries, RMN Manila’s Radyo Trabaho (RT) launched the first community pantry under the program, “Bayanihan sa Bayan ni Juan,” last April 2021 at the Guadalupe Bliss, Makati City.

The RT team delivered basic food necessities to the community by giving away vegetables, rice, canned goods, and eggs among others. In exchange for these items, the RT team received gratitude from the people who benefitted from the community pantry.

Generous partners in the realization of this activity are Vegetable Exporters and Vendors Association Philippines, Inc. (VEVA), Republic Biscuit Corporation (Rebisco), ACS Manufacturing Corporation., the RMN Foundation Inc., and the RMN Networks. Tau Gamma Phi members of the aforementioned area also took part in making sure that COVID-19 safety and health protocols were in place during the distribution of basic needs to the people.

Oplan Tambayayong: The RMN Cebu Community Pantry

To give and to receive–this is what the RMN Cebu Community Pantry has embodied, especially for the farmers of the recognized Vegetable Basket Capital of Cebu in Barangay Mantalungon, Dalaguete. By encouraging donors to purchase the produce of these farmers, RMN Cebu provides them a chance to maintain their livelihood and, in return, receive their good harvest for the beneficiaries of the Oplan Tambayayong. After two weeks of coordination and preparation, RMN Cebu was able to distribute more than 600,000 pesos worth of donations for more than 3,000 beneficiaries.

The Community Pantry promulgates the tagline, “Give what you can and take what you need.” With RMN Networks, the Foundation, together with its partners, donors, and volunteers, the local community pantries from different radio stations were able to give, and take in return the gratitude from the beneficiaries and the fulfillment of being able to help those who are in need during these trying times.
